Gallery Q: The Pommern, 2015… A magnificent old lady!

While in Mariehamn with my German friends, Renata and Johannes, we decided to visit one of the final sailing cargo ships, plying her trade from the Åland Islands until the middle of the nineteen thirties. The Pommern carried nitrates from Chile back to Europe by way of Cape Horn and was sailed by only twenty six men!

For me, the old square-rigged tall ships were the most beautiful things ever made by man, but I would say that wouldn’t I? My own relatives have sailed these ships for generations and their genes flow through me like a salty champagne.
