A ‘Starbucks’ from heaven?

In this cynical modern world, the name ‘Starbucks’ has become identified with everything that is wrong with modernity. But hang on a minute… let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. Here in Amsterdam, near Centraal Station, is the aforementioned cafe managed by Christo from the Orange Free State in South Africa.

It doesn’t look much… But go inside!

Most tourists will either miss it on their way to the red light district or a museum, which is a shame because the baristas are a lovely, friendly bunch. It is warm, cheap and has a lovely view of St Nicholas’s Cathedral.

Watching St Nicholas Cathedral from the window and in all aspects of light and weather... Lovely.

Christo’s establishment has become one of my ‘offices’ to write in, and somewhere to shelter from the bitter winter wind. Whenever I arrive, there is always a warm welcome and genuine empathy, plus encouragement on how well my Dutch is coming along! Maybe they’re being a little creative on the latter observation, but hey…… We all need our ego massaging from time to time, huh?

So if you’re ever in town, why not try them out, instead of the usual tourist traps. And if you hate cannabis (the effects of) as much as I do, you’ll be happy to know that there isn’t a whiff!

I told you there would be some odd posts… I mean, no Van Gogh museum? A ‘Starbucks’ instead?

Well…. ‘Different strokes for different folks’.
